With a sitcom as lovable as this it's annoying to have to say goodbye, but here the endearingly clunky heroine takes her final plunge, and viewers will know if a romantic resolution is on the cards, as per the rules of the genre. Then again, this was always a category-defying wonder, with the show's detractors craving more sting and less panto while perhaps missing the point that
is a melodrama but with fun substituted for drama. And tonight, in true Bette Davis fashion (à la Now, Voyager), Miranda does have her “I'm not afraid, mother” moment.
The character might always set herself up for failure, but Hart has hit the bullseye in fitting in signature trademarks – silly wordplay, disregard for conventional behaviour, cryptic innuendo – alongside true feeling and poignancy. Her last gallop, sadly.
The very last episode of the hit sitcom sees the shopkeeper making one final attempt to accept herself and find contentment. Will she ever be truly happy? Miranda Hart stars, with Patricia Hodge, Tom Ellis, Sarah Hadland and Sally Phillips, plus guest appearances from Mark Heap, Liza Tarbuck and Joe Wilkinson.
