It’s hard to think of any other TV series where the sparkling repartee includes “Tell me about the gross margins in the business” or “I’m interested in your balance sheet”. But that’s the thing about DD: it could slip into businessy dullness, but instead keeps delivering great confrontations, full of cut-and-thrust and the kind of slip-ups under pressure on which a career can stand or fall.
There are a couple of those tonight. At one point, a beanbag entrepreneur from Essex makes the mistake of sounding as if he’s not that fussed about money because, you know, quality of life is what matters to him. At that, Peter Jones puffs out his cheeks like Louis Armstrong, clearly furious that a man this laid back is touching him for £75k.
Elsewhere, there are pitches for a gin club, a pencil maker and 15-year-old’s invention for cleaning boots. It’s good to have them back.
Evan Davis presents the business ideas contest, with regular panellists Deborah Meaden, Peter Jones, Sarah Willingham, Touker Suleyman and Nick Jenkins returning to assess the profit-making potential of the contestants' grand plans. Among the entrepreneurial endeavours in this episode are ideas for miniature pencils, oversized beanbags and a machine for cleaning football boots. However, one contestant finds their hopes may be dashed by the revelation that their company is already heavily in debt.
