Review

As a pilot weaves through the Himalaya mountains on his way to Paro airport in Bhutan, his automatic warning system isn’t happy. “Terrain ahead! Pull up! Avoid terrain!” says a metallic voice in the cockpit, because landing at Paro involves skimming between ridges, then turning a blind corner just before the runway. “It gives you a rush of adrenaline every time,” says the captain.

It’s one of several wow-inducing scenes in this closing episode. Once again Dallas Campbell and Hannah Fry visit cool places and people who do cool jobs – such as ripping up old jets, auctioning off lost luggage and training pilots to cope with a double engine failure.

Summary

Dallas Campbell and Dr Hannah Fry conclude the series by examining the process of bringing a plane safely to the ground. Hannah meets air traffic controllers at the world's busiest airport and visits a site that has seen over 2000 unscheduled landings in the last decade. Dallas sits in the cockpit of a plane heading for Paro, Bhutan, a place where only 26 pilots in the world are qualified to land. Last in the series.
