Review

Contemplating a loved one’s death is an inevitable result of watching 24 Hours in A&E, but for 44-year-old Fiona, the prospect of losing her husband Stephan is a daily reality: he has a chronic heart condition that could kill him.

Forty-year-old Fernanda must also face potential loss when her stomach pain is thought to be an unviable pregnancy. But 19-year-old Emmanuel Junior and his family don’t need to imagine – Emmanuel’s sister died of sickle-cell disease, the same illness that brings him to St George’s.

Thankfully, nine-year-old Max, who fell off his skateboard, has much less serious things to consider – namely when he’ll be able to get his hands on a sausage roll.

Summary

Stephan, 39, is rushed to St George's with internal bleeding from his femoral artery, caused by complications following an angiogram he had the day before, and doctors are concerned his heart could be under potentially fatal strain. Emmanuel Jr (19) arrives in A&E after suffering an acute sickle cell crisis, and his mum Elizabeth talks about the impact the condition has had on the family, while 40-year-old Fernanda is admitted with abdominal pain, but the test results reveal a surprising reason for her discomfort.
