The first episode to be made in colour is an unruly, rumbustious affair, but one with lots to look out for. While Jones volunteers the services of his van, daily life at the butcher’s is nicely sketched, and includes the sole appearance of Jones’s assistant “Ray-Mond” (Dick Haydon). Wilson, meanwhile, manages to impress Mainwaring with a well-marshalled drill. Wonders never cease.
The boom mic creeps into shot twice at one stage, and there’s an early TV outing for Yes Minister’s Nigel Hawthorne as “Angry Man”, but we kick off with possibly the least effectual gas-mask lecture ever.
Not content with Jonesy's delivery van for safe and efficient transport, the bumbling platoon members decide to boost their defences and procure an armoured car. Classic comedy first aired in 1969, starring Clive Dunn, Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier.
