Review

The recent thawing of US/Cuban relations makes this documentary about Fidel Castro’s 50 years in power both pertinent and illuminating. However, although the film touches upon Castro’s social reforms, it’s based on American intelligence and so focuses mainly on his failings and the sinister side of his dictatorship.

The dramatisations are a bit dodgy, but hearing the views of former CIA and KGB officers is amazing. As well as adding background colour and opinion to this extraordinary period of history, they describe what would appear to be Castro’s less than supportive relationship with Che Guevara.

Summary

A profile of Cuba's former president, as related by the spies, agents, journalists and would-be assassins who shadowed him for more than 50 years.
