Review

Sidney has taken tragedy hard. Never mind the Christian spirit, whisky is the spirit he has turned to – getting so drunk that he gropes a barmaid in one scene. As Mrs Maguire says, “He’s lost, and we’re all lost without him.”

This is the cue for the archdeacon – that nasty old snake played by Geoffrey McGivern – to suggest to Leonard that perhaps he might be interested in taking over the parish, hissing, “Perhaps it’s time to cut out the dead wood…?”

It’s a shocking proposal (Leonard’s had a few of those lately), but we know Sidney will rally, and the cue is that his disgraced friend Sam reappears. Sam, remember, is the plausible young cleric who, in a storyline that has haunted the series, got a 15-year-old pregnant, then vanished when she died.

What follows is a slightly rackety morality tale about forgiveness but it builds to a wonderfully emotional finale for the series, firstly with Leonard playing a blinder as the mouse that roars, and then with lovelorn Sidney.

Summary

When Sidney's old friend Reverend Sam Milburn visits the parish claiming to be seeking forgiveness for his crimes, the vicar is torn. Matters complicate further when Harding Redmond finds out he has returned and makes threats against his life, and Sam flees. With his friend now missing, Sidney fears the worst and must once again join forces with Geordie to investigate. Meanwhile, Leonard continues to wrestle with his feelings for Daniel Marlowe, and a visit from Mrs Maguire leads to Amanda having a heart-to-heart with Guy. Last in the series.
