How long you live is 75 per cent down to lifestyle and 25 per cent down to genes so, although you can’t stop yourself ageing, there are ways to have a longer and healthier life. Angela Rippon, 71, and Chris van Tulleken, 37, investigate the key ways to “win years back”.

They find that dancing is scientifically proven to be a more effective form of exercise than going to the gym and that a vegan diet with plenty of nuts is vital – according to an energetic American centenarian anyway. And he should know. However, Chris prefers the idea of taking a drug that can prolong life – and that’s closer than you might think.

First of a two-part documentary in which Angela Rippon and Dr Chris van Tulleken investigate the latest experiments and research that could help put the brakes on the ageing process. The first programme focuses on the physical aspects, revealing how much is down to how people live their lives and how people's lifestyle choices can help combat the effects of ageing. Chris finds out how public attitudes to the elderly can have a negative impact, spending a day as an 80-year-old with the help of Hollywood-style prosthetics, and Angela visits a study in Germany comparing the benefits of dancing with conventional gym exercises.
