S9-E6 Never Too Old

S9-E6 Never Too Old

Why does Dad’s Army still strike a chord, and inspire such love, nearly 40 years later? “It’s because we reminded the British people of their finest hour,” the late, great Jimmy Perry once told me. “It had wobbly back projection and cardboard scenery, but also the truth… and great artists that brought it to life.”

Tonight’s story, Never Too Old, the 80th and final episode, acts as a moving tribute to Jimmy and his co-writer David Croft, and to the show itself. In a relaxed and heartfelt outing twinkly Jack Jones and Mrs Fox finally tie the knot, and at the end the platoon all raise a mug to the Home Guard. It may just leave you with a lump in your throat.

Lance Corporal Jones finally takes the plunge as he decides to make an honest woman of Mrs Fox. Last-ever episode of the wartime comedy, starring Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, Clive Dunn, John Laurie and Ian Lavender. First shown in 1977.
