In this episode Julia Bradbury marches across West Dorset. “I’m having a bit of a Broadchurch moment,” she says, because the ITV drama was filmed in nearby West Bay. She also marches across the line between engaging enthusiasm for a subject and near-fatally overselling it.
She describes the lovely Colmer’s Hill as “iconic” three times in as many minutes then tells us beneath it lies “something you could never imagine”, which turns out to be… a thatched cottage. When the countryside is this gorgeous and the views this fine, she doesn’t need to try so hard to convince us, but in the end it doesn’t matter – it’s still an agreeable piece of escapism.
From the Domesday village of Symondsbury, the expert walker follows the ancient in-land drovers route, including a climb up the iconic Colmer's Hill. Her journey takes her through the Dorset Holloways, and culminates with a climb to Golden Cap - the highest point on the south coast. Her trek ends with a meal of fish and chips in a pub with sea views across Lyme Bay.
