Natural Born Winners

Natural Born Winners

Series 1 - Episode 1

Gareth Thomas might be a Welsh rugby legend, but his bulk means he’s definitely not designed for his latest challenge: racing across 22 miles of hills, mud, gorse and bog – against a horse. It’s a bizarre challenge, the result of a drunken bet in a Welsh pub in 1980 that’s turned into a cult endurance test. Now Thomas, along with Olympic sprinter Donovan Bailey, superbike champion James Toseland and sprinter Iwan Thomas, are taking on “Man versus Horse”.

In later weeks, the four will travel the world looking for unique sporting challenges, from oil wrestling in Turkey to horseback archery in Japan. They were all top athletes in their day, but if this equine escapade is anything to go by, it’s going to take a lot to spur them on to victory these days.

Athletes Donovan Bailey, James Toseland, Gareth Thomas and Iwan Thomas travel around the world to compete in various countries' unusual and demanding sporting events, taking on local champions. The tour begins in the Welsh village of Llanwrtyd Wells, where they enter in local fell running event Man Versus Horse, where they must run 21 miles across difficult terrain, competing against mounted opponents.
