And you thought athletics had left the TV screen for good after the Commonwealth Games. Nope. This time the best of Europe come out to play in Zurich, having mostly watched from the sidelines as the Commonwealth countries competed in Glasgow.
Team GB is united once more: competition begins with English decathlete Ashley Bryant looking to push on from his silver medal success in Glasgow. Later come the men’s 100m heats, although Commonwealth silver medallist Adam Gemili is concentrating on the 200m this time round. Shot-put and the women’s 10,000m are the first medals to be decided, with coverage continuing until Sunday 17 August. Do you have the stamina?
Gabby Logan presents coverage of the evening session on day one of the biennial event, held at the Letzigrund in Zurich, Switzerland. Russia's Aleksandr Lesnoy and Germany's David Storl are among the favourites to win the first gold of the championships in the men's shot put from 6.34, and medals are also decided in the women's 10,000m at 7.20. The British trio of Dwain Chambers, Harry Aikines-Ayreetey and James Dasaolu will expect to progress from the first round of the 100m at 5.32, Tiffany Porter is likely to be involved in the semi-finals of the women's 100m hurdles at 7.56, and Michael Rimmer gets his 800m bid under way at 6.12. Plus, the decathlon continues with the closing stages of the high jump and the 400m at 6.52, and there is also qualifying for the men's discus from 5.45 and women's long jump from 7.10, as well as the first round of the women's 400m at 5.00. Commentary by Steve Cram, Andrew Cotter, Brendan Foster and Jonathan Edwards, and analysis from Colin Jackson, Denise Lewis and Paula Radcliffe, with reports by Phil Jones.
