Day Six

Day Six

Week two and the action from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club gets into its stride. (The croquet side of things never gets quite so much attention, does it?) By this stage our weekday routines are set: make sure you’re home to catch the highlights. Or if you’re not working during the day, draw the curtains and settle in for the duration with a cooling shot of, er, barley water.

But at weekends, it’s open season. Lawns can go unmown and shopping unshopped as we blot out football for a few hours and enjoy the unique human drama a grass-court tennis match can serve up. Let’s hope the drama doesn’t include too many scares for Britain’s defending champ: same again please, Andy.

Sue Barker presents live coverage of the opening matches on day six at the All England Club, where the third-round men's and ladies' singles draws are set to continue, with matches including Serena Williams v Alize Cornet, Milos Raonic v Lukasz Kubot and Ana Ivanovic v Sabine Lisicki. Last year rain delays earlier in the week left the organisers with a few extra matches to squeeze into the schedules on day six, meaning the crowd were treated to even more entertainment, and Centre Court saw victories for Bernard Tomic, Lisicki, Novak Djokovic and Williams. The latter two were the number one seeds here, and Djokovic comfortably defeated Jeremy Chardy in straight sets on his way to the final, while Williams continued the defence of her title with the routine thrashing of the veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm. However, that was to be the five-time singles champion's last victory of the tournament, as she lost to eventual runner-up Lisicki in the fourth round, as the ladies' draw continued to surprise, culminating in Marion Bartoli being crowned champion.
