Sue Barker presents from the hallowed grass courts of the All England Club, as the opening day of the Grand Slam tournament continues, with Andy Murray beginning the defence of his men's singles title against David Goffin. Murray famously beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets in last year's final to finally end the British drought in the event and, despite his thrashing by Rafael Nadal in the French Open semi-final earlier this month, the Scot will be among the favourites on a surface that suits his game. A place in round two will be the only thing on Murray's mind this afternoon, especially given the carnage that occurred on the opening few days last year, which saw big name after big name eliminated from the tournament, not to mention an almost unprecedented level of withdrawals due to injury, both before and during matches. A repeat of Murray's opening fixture last year will do nicely for the British number one, who defeated Benjamin Becker 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to progress, but day one saw Rafael Nadal and Stanislas Wawrinka both beaten, with Nadal's defeat causing a seismic shock in the men's draw. Other matches scheduled today are Jurgen Melzer v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Mikhail Youzhny v James Ward and Paula Kania v Li Na.
