Using dramatic reconstructions and expert opinion, John Morrison revisits the story of Eugene Chantrelle, a French teacher hanged for murdering his wife in Edinburgh in 1878. A gifted linguist with medical knowledge, he frequently threatened to poison his wife - and was accused of so doing upon her death. Chantrelle pleaded his innocence up to the moment he was hanged and the evidence against him was circumstancial - and his great-grandson speaks of the lasting damage caused to the family.
