The ticking clock, the split screen, the queasy interrogation scenes – it can only mean one thing: yes, the hour of Bauer is upon us once again. After four years away, the man who could incapacitate both Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal with a hard stare has resurfaced in London, just in time for a visit to the capital by the President of the United States. A neat coincidence, reason the CIA head honchos. And they’re not wrong.
revival doesn’t exactly move things on a great deal from the series that came before. But then why fool around with a winning formula? Jack Bauer remains almost comically tough and taciturn (though he does growl his first “dammit” in the opening episode), the action is pacey and if you get the impression that Kiefer Sutherland could do the whole shebang with his hands tied behind his back then you’d be right – the fight in handcuffs proves as much.
The US drama makes its eagerly awaited return, four years after Jack Bauer waged a one-man war against a political conspiracy - becoming a wanted man in the process. Now he's back and in London, just as his old boss James Heller - now the US president - is paying a visit. And as ever, both men are being followed by trouble. Kiefer Sutherland stars in the first of 12 episodes - designed to streamline the action - with old favourites Mary Lynn Rajskub, William Devane and Kim Raver joined by Yvonne Strahovski, Benjamin Bratt and Tate Donovan.
