Review

The second of these exemplary films exploring crime and punishment in the USA promises exceptional access to the jury on the trial of Guy Heinze Jr in Georgia. Heinze stood accused of beating to death eight family members in an argument over drugs.

The film’s access to the defence, prosecution, police, Heinze’s surviving family and some of the young jurors chosen to pass judgement, provides an emotional atmosphere, with the jurors often in tears during their deliberations.

As the trial progresses towards a pronouncement on Heinze Jr’s fate, it appears the jury has reached a deadlock, until some last-minute manoeuvring by the defence and prosecution teams…

Summary

The series looking at capital punishment through the eyes of young people continues by following the trial of Guy Heinze Jr, accused of murdering his father and seven other members of his family in 2009. The documentary focuses on how the jury reaches its verdict and captures the legal manoeuvring that results in a last-minute deal to avoid a hung jury.
