After a successful pilot last year, Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez and his tiny band of brother and sister cops return with a six-part series of
, based on Ann Cleeves’s bestselling crime novels. In the first two-part story, Raven Black, it’s midsummer on the Scottish islands and everyone’s driven just a little bit mad by the constant daylight. As lowering clouds fill the big, empty skies a young woman’s body is found on the beach. She’s been murdered, and pecked by birds.
There’s little of the suffocating, claustrophobic atmosphere of Cleeves’s original book (I highly recommend it), which has dissolved in the transition to television. But you’ll quickly get swept up in island life, where, because of the overwhelming isolation, everyone has to be self-reliant, both emotionally and physically. As Perez (Douglas Henshall) hunts for the murderer, he uncovers horrors that reach back into the past.
Part one of two. DI Jimmy Perez and his team investigate the murder of a teenage girl whose body was found on a secluded beach, and time and again the same name crops up - that of local recluse Magnus Bain, whose home overlooks the crime scene and who had forged an unlikely friendship with the victim. But then the public prosecutor draws attention to the unsolved disappearance of a girl 19 years previously - a case that shares several similarities with this one. Scotland-based crime drama, starring Douglas Henshall and Julie Graham, with a guest appearance by Brian Cox.
