Historical TV documentaries always portray love in Tudor times with ropey reconstructions featuring comely women in big dresses running in slow-motion through gardens pursued by lantern-jawed hunks. There’s plenty of that here, which is a shame, because Dr Suzannah Lipscomb can manage the story of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn perfectly well all by herself, thank you.
Neither is she helped by the torrid title or the pointless shots of the actress playing Anne lying on a bed being showered with rose petals à la American Beauty. But Henry’s love letters to Anne are beautiful, as is the illuminated book of hours they both shared that’s full of tender messages. What a pity he had her executed.
Part one of two. Historian Suzannah Lipscomb examines the extraordinary story of the tumultuous love affair between Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, beginning by exploring the seven-year courtship of the royal couple. Using dramatic reconstructions and first-hand accounts, she delves into their backgrounds and personalities, searching for the triggers - personal and political - that would lead to their falling in love.
