Review

Dour DCI Alan Banks and his brittle, clever sidekick Annie Cabbot are in the midst of a jagged courtship. Maybe it’s unwise for a boss to date an underling, even one as sharp as Annie, but they are trying to make a go of things on a date in the pouring rain.

But romance comes second to crime and the evening ends as neither of them would wish when they gaze upon the corpse of an investigative journalist found murdered at a holiday chalet in deepest Yorkshire.

In the second solid, involving mystery of the series, based on Peter Robinson’s novel Piece of My Heart, starstruck Banks (Stephen Tompkinson) gets to show off his arcane musical knowledge when he meets one of his idols (played by the cool Emma Fielding). It turns out she’s landlady of the death-chalet. But what’s her connection with the victim?

Summary

Part one of two. When the body of investigative journalist Matt Barber is found in a holiday chalet in a remote village, Banks and his team are initially confronted by an overwhelming number of leads. As the detective identifies a connection between the victim and a mysterious death in the 1980s connected to the surviving members of a cult rock band, he must begin to unpick decades of lies. To make matters worse, the deceased man's father is former senior police officer Jack Barber, who is now a candidate in the local commissioner elections - and Morton is convinced he is obstructing their inquiry. Stephen Tompkinson stars.
