“He was graceful”; “Charismatic”; “He smelt very nice” – some unexpected compliments paid to Gaddafi by those who fell under his spell, in what is otherwise an appalling account of one man’s descent into sadism and megalomania.
A former bodyguard (and the Libyan dictator liked attractive women guarding him) tells of a mass execution of teenagers. A teacher reveals how he selected schoolgirls for sex at his palace, while the widow of a foreign minister says Gaddafi kept his opponents’ corpses in freezers for decades. A German rocket scientist and even Gaddafi’s plastic surgeon shed light on his anxiety, depravity and fantasy of becoming the “Golden Leader of Africa”.
Documentary exploring the private life of former Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi, revealing his disturbing abuses of power. Filmed across the Pacific, Cuba, Brazil, the US, South Africa and Australia, the programme also considers how Libya's vast oil reserves were a key reason why the `mad dog', as President Reagan dubbed him, managed to maintain such a strong alliance with the West prior to the Arab Spring that cemented his demise at home and led to his overthrow and death in 2011.
