In the Heat of the Day

Series 2 - Episode 3 In the Heat of the Day

As Andrew Graham-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli set off on the last leg of their top-to-toe tour of Italy’s west coast, Andrew realises how the regions differ. The north is green and calm, while Campania and Calabria in the south are warmer, more vibrant and occasionally slightly crazy.

Here the pair taste gutsy dishes shaped like a mini-Vesuvius or packed with chillis, shriek with painful laughter during what Andrew calls a “Calabresian massage” (a bumping, thumping, jolting ride in a Fiat driven at breakneck speed along a rough country track) and admire the Baroque masterpieces of Naples. But no sooner have they reached their destination than they start to plan their next trip.

The final leg of Andrew Graham-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli's journey takes them to Campania and Calabria, where they explore the food and culture of the southern regions. Their first stop is Naples, which has been attracting visitors for centuries with its vibrant street life and baroque masterpieces, while further down the coast Amalfi and Paestum reveal outside influences that date back millennia.
