Review

One of the things that marks out 24 Hours in A&E is its treatment of old people. It’s not an area where television always does a great job, but in this series we often get interesting, complicated older characters who you can’t help noticing seem a lot more appreciative of the treatment they receive than some younger patients.

Eighty-nine-year-old Alyce – this episode's star – is a good example. Her medical story is undramatic (she’s had a fall and is feeling rotten) but her general wit and warmth are a joy. There’s also excellent light relief in the form of Dylan (6) and his mischievous sister Daisy, who take to playing with the medical equipment in their cubicle. Stick around for the very funny payoff at the end.

Summary

Doctors run tests on 89-year-old Alyce, who has been brought to King's by ambulance after falling near her home. She's accompanied by her close friend Linda, and reveals her resolve to make sure she lives long enough to celebrate her next birthday. Soon after, 23-year-old groom-to-be Sean is examined following an epileptic seizure lasting most of the night.
