Review

“I fell over last week, otherwise I’m as fit as a fiddle,” says 71-year-old Pat after she’s brought into King’s College Hospital’s A&E department after her husband Bill found her unconscious. It’s clear that Pat is confused, but is it down to drink – she enjoys her gin and tonics – or something more sinister?

Then there’s 63-year-old Mick, who’s been found in the street with a serious head injury after, he tells hospital staff, he’d been celebrating “St Paddy’s week”. In an episode with a sad little coda we follow a clutch of men and women whose lives are changed for ever by a brush with mortality.

Summary

Fifty-year-old mechanical engineer Graham is rushed into King's College Hospital in south London with a suspected heart attack, and after his brother reminisces about their carefree youth, the doctor suggests Graham's problems may be related to his more recent stressful lifestyle. Meanwhile, 71-year-old Pat is found unconscious by her husband, and 65-year-old Mick is discovered lying in the street with blood coming out of his ear. In both cases, the medics suspect brain haemorrhages, so scans are required.
