Review

Jim Broadbent is dogged, implacable Detective Chief Superintendent Tommy Butler, the man who pursued the Great Train Robbers, in the concluding part of Chris Chibnall’s bold and riveting drama. It’s four days after the robbery and the British establishment is in crisis at what is seen by many as a direct attack on the Queen — it was a Royal Mail train, after all, that Bruce Reynolds and his gang held up in the Buckinghamshire countryside.

The Home Secretary is under pressure from the Prime Minister, and Butler is put in charge. Soon he and his hand-picked team of officers, which included Detective Superintendent Jack Slipper (Nick Moran), are combing the farmhouse that was the robbers’ lair.

Broadbent is great as Butler, a private man, not at all like his fellow coppers, and certainly not the kind of bloke to join them in an after-work drink at the pub. But he got results.

Summary

The police wake to the news of a robbery, but the full extent of the crime and its haul - £2.6million - only becomes evident over the following days. It's clear the local CID is ill-equipped to solve a case of such magnitude, so Scotland Yard is called in, with a six-strong team of detectives headed by the Flying Squad's enigmatic chief Tommy Butler. In a race against time, they set out to identify every criminal involved and bring them to justice before they flee the country - but even if they can, will they find the money? Jim Broadbent stars in the concluding part of the drama about the most infamous heist in British history, with George Costigan, Robert Glenister, Tim Pigott-Smith, Nick Moran and John Salthouse. Written by Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall.
