Review

Snow is falling as Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, alternating as Santa and a helpful elf, bake Christmas treats in a cosy kitchen. Even if your idea of festive culinary exertion is to reach for a box of supermarket mince pies from your top cupboard, there might be something here to tempt you to roll up your sleeves to thump a lump of dough.

Certainly, as we have come to expect, Hollywood throws himself into lots of manly kneading and pummelling when he makes a Scottish black bun (more interesting than it sounds) and a gorgeous “leftovers pie” that looks like a tiny piece of the Parthenon has landed miraculously on the work surface, such are its classical-architecture flourishes.

Mary brings her magic touch to a pretty gingerbread house, complete with snow made from icing, and a Tunis cake, a heavenly creation involving a light sponge and chocolate ganache.

Summary

Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood demonstrate how to make a number of festive treats, including stollen, mincemeat streusel and a gingerbread house that can be created with all the family. There are also recipes for black bun, which is a Scottish fruitcake traditionally eaten at New Year, and Paul's hand-raised Boxing Day pie that uses all the leftovers from Christmas dinner.
