Review

Simon Reeve has brought us many good travel programmes, but is he the right man for a series on pilgrimages? When a Lindisfarne vicar suggests that a pilgrimage is about the way the exterior landscape can shed light on your inner landscape, Reeve looks nonplussed. "Should I be looking for my inner landscape? I'd love to know if I've got one!"

This has always been his appeal as a presenter - genial good cheer that breezes through places and experiences rather than plumbing spiritual depths. His route for the first programme takes him from Lindisfarne to Canterbury, via Lincoln and Walsingham. “I’m not a religious person,” he confesses. “But I wish I was.”

Summary

Author and broadcaster Simon Reeve retraces the steps of British pilgrims, exploring the faith, hopes, desires and even the food that helped keep them on the road. In the first episode he sets out on a journey to Canterbury, beginning at the Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland, one of the earliest sites of Christian pilgrimage in Britain.
