Tim Marlow: Great Artists

Episode 7 Constable

The art historian explores the work of John Constable, who was born in Suffolk in 1776, and whose work was heavily influenced by the rolling countryside of the county. After studying in London, he vowed to become a `natural painter' - but his lot was not an easy one, as landscapes were not in great demand at that time. Undeterred, he struggled to support his family without compromising his style, even venturing into a more avant-garde approach in his later years, but he didn't receive the recognition he craved until after his death in 1837.
