Portrait Artist of the Year 2013: London

Portrait Artist of the Year 2013: London

Series 1

If you’re suffering from Great British Bake Off withdrawal, this competition to uncover new artistic talent may be the perfect antidote. Not only do genuinely talented contestants undertake timed challenges in a marquee, lovers of Mary Berry’s soft-spoken warmth will be thrilled to see Joan Bakewell co-presenting proceedings alongside Frank Skinner.

In this first heat, 21 professional and amateur artists have four hours to produce a portrait of either Robert Lindsay, Juliet Stevenson or Alison Steadman, all of whom sit live. Judges Kathleen Soriano, director of exhibitions at the Royal Academy, acclaimed portrait painter Tai-Shan Schierenberg and Kate Bryan, head of contemporary art at The Fine Art Society, then decide who will progress to the next round and compete for the much-coveted prize: a £10,000 commission to paint Wolf Hall author Hilary Mantel.

Joan Bakewell and Frank Skinner present a competition to find the UK's most talented portrait artist, with a £10,000 commission to paint Booker-winning author Hilary Mantel and a hanging space in the British Library's permanent collection as the prize. They head to London's Trafalgar Square for the first of four national heats, where 21 artists have been invited to paint celebrity sitters including Alison Steadman, Robert Lindsay and Juliet Stevenson.
