Review

A bit like the continent it depicts, this series has arid expanses that often burst into strange and vivid delights. Our crusty but enthused host Edmund Capon delivers a broad sweep of the developing art scene over the past 100 years, from George Lambert’s Landing at Gallipoli (“an unheroic image of war”) to modern war artist Ben Quilty, who’s been to Afghanistan and captured on canvas soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder. Beach photography and images of the outback cheer things up.

Summary

Edmund Capon investigates how Australian identity evolved in the first half of the 20th century against the backdrop of the First and Second World Wars. He reveals how artists explored the possibilities and exposed the problems of the new nation, revolutionising the country's creativity and seeing their work become recognised on a global stage.
