Don’t be fooled by the name, there is nothing warm and cheery about Sunny Beach, the Bulgarian resort where British tourists flock in their thousands every year to lose themselves in obscenely cheap alcohol and readily available party drugs. Stacey Dooley’s first stop is a daytime bar crawl where “topless chicks” are rewarded with free drinks and the reps shirk all responsibility to have drunken sex with their customers in the pool of a family hotel.
Ever empathetic, she also sympathises with local business owners and talks to members of the emergency services, as well as Sunny Beach’s selectively ignorant mayor to explore why it is that such tawdry tourism continues to go unchecked by the authorities.
The journalist travels to Sunny Beach on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, where she delves into the party scene and uncovers why this resort is quickly overtaking Magaluf and Kavos as the destination of choice for young hedonist Brits. Stacey learns about the consequences of cheap alcohol and the easy access to illegal drugs for revellers, while examining what the authorities are doing to control the antics of the holiday-makers and the impact the party culture is having locally.
