Review

Ruthless commandant Paul Hollywood joins the Suet Stasi to deliver this chilling admonition: “The last thing I want is stodgy suet.” But mercifully none of the six remaining bakers is taken into custard-y (ahem).

In fact, the signature bake to make a suet pudding, the first challenge of pastry week, goes off remarkably smoothly with everyone feeling chipper and focused. The hopefuls are so well-matched and so keen to win a place in next week’s quarter finals that the task is approached methodically and calmly. Ah, but wait till the technical challenge and then the showstopper, that’s when we see the quivering of cool exteriors. And perhaps someone is just a little bit too confident…

Meanwhile, in the Tent of Dreams, Sue Perkins is particularly frisky and falls headlong into a variation on the comic possibilities of “spotted dick”, reducing a baker to helpless giggles.

Summary

Judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood set the remaining contestants three tasks involving pastry, beginning by asking them to make signature suet puddings. For Mary's technical challenge, they must prepare eight religieuse - delicate choux buns filled with creme patissiere and topped with ganache - before creating three different types of perfectly puffed pastries in the showstopper round. Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins present.
