Review

Sir Trevor follows up his programme about death row with a visit to two Indiana prisons where some of America’s most dangerous female criminals are held. Not that you’d guess that these outwardly pleasant, polite, smiling women had shot people in the face or committed GBH or attempted murder. Tellingly many describe how their own parents had served time when they were children, though all express the hope their own kids won’t repeat the pattern.

McDonald is impeccably polite throughout the interviews and the mask of kindly but detached interest slips only briefly when one inmate openly weeps at the prospect of not seeing her kids or family for years.

Summary

Part one of two. Trevor McDonald follows life inside two prisons holding some of America's most notorious female criminals - Indiana Women's Prison and Rockville Correctional Facility in the same US state. Among the inmates he meets in the first edition are Sarah Pender, who went on the run while serving 110 years for double murder, before being captured four months later, and Martha Search, who is looking forward to getting to grips with modern technology when her 20-year sentence comes to an end.
