Peaky Blinders

Series 1 - Episode 3

Review

Peaky Blinders has the rhythms of a western and the colour palette of a stormcloud. Everything in 1919 Birmingham is muddy black or grey, but mostly fifty shades of grey. Tonight, the action briefly shifts to the plusher surroundings of Cheltenham racecourse, where lonely gang leader Tommy has a rendezvous with new ally Billy Kimber, as the champagne flows and lovely Grace twirls in a red dress... That’s not the only red we see: there’s a burst of violence too, that slashes through the story.

Cillian Murphy remains hypnotically good as Tommy. He has the air of an abstracted angel, despairing for the earthbound souls around him. In reality he’s no angel, of course: his business is fleecing poor people for their earnings. And the Blinders’ problems are multiplying, with the IRA added to their foes, and Tommy more haunted than ever by his time in the trenches.

Summary

Two men claiming to be IRA sympathisers approach Thomas in the Garrison and offer to buy the missing crate of guns they have heard he has in his possession. The gang leader also goes to Cheltenham races with Grace, where he aims to persuade kingpin Billy Kimber to make the Peaky Blinders part of his operation, while Ada secretly marries communist agitator Freddie Thorne. Drama, starring Cillian Murphy.
