The final episode of what’s been an effective thriller is weighed down by far too much plangent piano music and soft-focus memories aimed at pushing us into feeling oh so sad. But both are superfluous. The writing and acting can do that all by themselves as we discover what really happened to little Callum Reid.
As DCI Maggie Brand (excellent Tamsin Greig) digs deeper into the backgrounds of Callum’s family and his neighbours, and with everyone apparently nursing burdensome secrets, she’s having problems with her own troubled little son. Her boss, as TV detective bosses tend to do, is also breathing down her neck, desperate to wrap up the murder inquiry. “You have to let it go, it’s over,” he tells her. But is it?
Maggie has no choice but to charge her prime suspect when he reveals information only the killer could have known, but she's not convinced he is the culprit. A brutal death then seems to close the case for good and the detective faces a tough decision. Will she protect her career or expose the truth? Meanwhile, Claire and Daniel's marriage is pushed to breaking point by the return of their neighbour Teresa, and the reappearance of an old face leaves Luke shaken. Crime drama set across two timelines, starring Tamsin Greig, Katherine Kelly and Darren Boyd. Last in the series.
