Review

The tests in this series for canine intelligence, empathy, understanding and so on are hardly scientific. For one thing it’s tricky getting a dog to pay attention when a hundred other hounds are barking and leaping about.

But they give us an idea of the different skills and attributes of the breeds plus there are some fun tests to try at home including identifying different barks and getting your pet to copy when you yawn or respond to your crying.

The best moments though are during the big red sofa interviews with dog owners: moving, informative and occasionally unintentionally hilarious. “She’s a heaven-sent fur baby,” says one of her pug.

Summary

Kate Humble and Steve Leonard delve into the psychology of the human-dog relationship to discover how canines have evolved to read people better than any other creature. The team examines the UK's 10 most popular breeds, while Ruth Goodman explores the story of Greyfriars Bobby, who allegedly guarded his owner's grave for 14 years, and travels to Swimbridge in Devon to visit the former home of the Reverend John Russell, who bred the first Jack Russell terrier.
