Review

Gary Lineker knows nothing of his family history, there isn’t even WDYTYA’s customary kindly elderly relative to show him treasured family photos. In fact, just two such pictures exist after a flood destroyed the rest of the Lineker archive. So the sports presenter meets a professional genealogist who’s mapped out his ancestry.

Lineker decides to research two of his forebears on his grandmother’s side. One, his great-great-great-grandfather, turns out to have been an inept poacher who was repeatedly imprisoned (Lineker visits Leicester Prison, where the warders greet him cheerily with “Hello, Gary” before he’s searched). The other, his great-great-great-great-grandfather, was an altogether more intelligent and complex man. Thomas Billingham worked hard to better himself with considerable help from a benefactor. As Lineker completes his search in various parts of snow-covered Britain, we learn the derivation of the word “stationer”.

Summary

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker studies the life of his great-great-great-grandfather James Pratt, discovering he was a poacher in Victorian England and served time in Leicester Prison. Gary wants to find out why his ancestor became a repeat offender, and also get to the bottom of how Thomas Billingham, a forebear who was the son of an illiterate gardener, ended up as a highly skilled legal clerk.
