James was 13 when he became addicted to yaba, a dangerous cocktail of methamphetamine and caffeine that is currently wreaking havoc amongst Thailand’s youth. Now aged 14 and in compulsory rehabilitation in Bangkok, James promises that he will never touch the drug again. As worried presenter Stacey Dooley comments, this is unlikely considering that yaba, which translates as “crazy medicine”, is available “everywhere you go” in the Thai capital.
For this, the second part of her harrowing series on worldwide drug trends, Dooley accompanies Thai police on night raids and asks how long it will be before British tourists become hooked on the violence-inducing drug. In a particularly disturbing scene, Dooley visits a detox centre where former yaba users stand like “zombies”, talking to the walls.
The presenter examines yaba, a dangerous mix of methamphetamine and caffeine, the use of which is sweeping through Thailand. Stacey meets a hospital ward full of addicts who face the risk of long-term psychosis after using the drug, and later joins the Thai authorities during bar raids as they try to fight back.
