You want to see a movie. What will influence your decision? The script? Director? Who’s actually in the film will probably play more than a minor part in your deliberations, yet the casting director is one of the cinema business’s unsung heroes (they get credited at the beginning of films, but don’t get Oscar-nominated). This HBO film aims to correct this error with an in-depth profile of Marion Dougherty, who worked for decades for many of the biggest studios and directors and brought a huge roster of actors to the fore. A host of famous names, from Glenn Close to Martin Scorsese, sing the praises of a woman who had an uncanny ability to recognise screen talent.

Summary

Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford, Robert de Niro, Jeff Bridges, Woody Allen and John Travolta are among the stars discussing the role of the casting director in Hollywood. The film focuses on Marion Dougherty, who plucked many subsequently successful stars from obscurity - including Bette Midler, Dustin Hoffman, Glenn Close and Gene Hackman.
