Ann Cleeves’s ramshackle, off-kilter detective,
Stanhope returns in a new series of crime mysteries set against the beautiful wind-whipped backdrop of Northumberland.
As the episode opens, three young women are having girly chats and getting drunk in a big, beautiful house made almost entirely of glass in the middle of nowhere. But gunshots fracture the damp night and someone falls dead. (There’s a lesson here; never, ever investigate a suspicious noise, outside, in the pitch dark, particularly when you are wearing only your titchy pyjamas.)
Soon Det Chief Insp Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) is shambling through the crime scene as a thoroughly absorbing story of jealousy and guilt unfolds. Though it’s not based on a Cleeves book, Castles in the Air is a compact and effective mystery that gives Vera plenty of room to do what she does best – watch, listen and dig into other people’s souls.
Young physiotherapist Lizzie Faulkner is shot dead while enjoying a holiday at a luxury country retreat. The resulting murder investigation unearths betrayal, guilt and the desire for atonement - as Vera moves quickly to avoid another tragedy, and Joe tries to make amends with the demons of his past. Crime drama, starring Brenda Blethyn, David Leon, Paul Ritter and Eva Quinn.
