More used to cooking meals where money is no object, James Martin, Angela Hartnett and Richard Corrigan have quite a challenge in this
Great British Menu
They’re each living with a family that’s struggling to make ends meet, and no wonder: food prices have risen by 25 per cent in the past five years. Shockingly, Corrigan’s hosts have just £1.66 per day to feed each member of the family. After this sobering experience they then have to produce a cheap nutritious meal for the GBM judges and Mary Berry. A far cry from GBM’s usual fare but it’s undoubtedly a worthy and eye-opening exercise.
One-off Great British Menu special in which leading chefs tackle food poverty by living with three families who are struggling to make ends meet. James Martin, Angela Hartnett and Richard Corrigan have to eat the same meals as their hosts, and need to utilise every ounce of their professional skills when challenged to shop and cook on each household's budget - including a family of six who have on average just £1.66 per day to feed the whole clan. Fired up by the experience of Britain on the breadline, the trio host a banquet to raise awareness of the problem with fellow chefs, politicians, and supermarket and charity representatives - who are all served nutritious meals made on next to nothing.
