Review

Leonard Rossiter’s brilliantly realised Rigsby became a byword for seedy, grasping landlords in Rising Damp, one of the 1970s’ best-loved and most successful sitcoms.

As an Easter treat, ITV3 is dedicating its holiday schedule to Rising Damp, showing every episode across the bank holiday weekend, including the Rising Damp film. There’s a documentary too, narrated by Martin Clunes.

It includes archive footage from the shows and interviews with the cast and crew, including creator Eric Chappell, who reveals his inspiration for the ghastly Rigsby. And there are contributions from Don Warrington (who played Philip) and Christopher Strauli, who had the difficult task of filling the gap left after the death of Richard Beckinsale.

Summary

Miss Jones reports a prowler to the police and it is not long before an inspector calls to investigate - but, unfortunately for Rigsby, he is not all he seems. George Sewell guest stars in the classic comedy, with Leonard Rossiter and Frances de la Tour.
