Series 5-Episode 1

Series 5-Episode 1

Fans of this spiffy sci-fi caper could be forgiven for thinking it had vanished into one of its own time tunnels. But after a 16-month wait terrestrial viewers can at last enjoy series five (following a 2011 outing on Watch). As we rejoin the government-funded bug-zappers, something underground is causing chaos in the city, and it’s not the Central Line. There are no reckless deviations from the show’s winning formula. It’s the customary blend of knotty conspiracy, romantic entanglement and rampaging beastie. But there’s more confidence in the plotting, so tonight we learn more about ex-soldier Matt’s identity and shifty Philip’s New Dawn project than we did in the entire last series. Connor and Abby (real-life couple Andrew-Lee Potts and Hannah Spearitt, second and third from right in picture) still get all the cute moments, and as sardonic pinstripe James Lester, Ben Miller nails all the comic possibilities with delicious aplomb.

Lester hears reports that a man has been dragged into a huge hole in the ground, so the team heads out to investigate and soon comes face to face with a giant burrowing insect causing chaos across the city. Matt devises a plan to draw the creature out so it can be killed, but more than one member of the gang is put in danger as the battle commences. Back at ARC, Philip hires a new lab assistant for Connor, but is there more to her than meets the eye? Sci-fi adventure, starring Ben Miller, Ciaran McMenamin, Andrew-Lee Potts, Hannah Spearritt and Alexander Siddig.
