It’s Christmas Eve in the comedy that does a miraculous job of reproducing sitcom rhythms from 40 years ago. And what does Christmas mean for the Khans? It means that, ten months after Shazia and Amjad's wedding, their baby is due (and you can probably sense where that thread is leading).
It means that Mr Khan has the honour of putting the star on Sparkhill’s inter-faith Christmas tree – if he can make it in time. And it means Pakistani versions of traditional Christmas drinks for our hero to offer the local vicar, including, he explains, “Mulled wine, but without the wine: it’s just hot water with some sticks in it and those black bits you get at the bottom.”
It's Christmas Eve, 10 months after Shazia and Amjad's wedding, and Mr Khan is in a festive mood for once. He's even bought himself a new suit. Could it have something to do with the fact that he has been given the honour of placing the star on top of the Sparkhill inter-faith Christmas tree? There's great excitement as the entire family gathers at the Khan house before heading out to the ceremony. But then it turns out Shazia has alternative plans, setting in motion a frantic chain of events that can best be described as The Greatest Pakistani Christmas Story Ever Told. Adil Ray, Shobu Kapoor and Maya Sondhi star.
