Review

This documentary series from 2005 about the lives of ten well-known figures from history uses previously lost or hidden photos of them, together with more familiar images, to go beyond the carefully constructed public image and explore the nature of celebrity.

In this edition it examines Marilyn Monroe’s love affair with the camera and suggests that she used photography to gain a sense of control of her life. It also profiles the work of photographer Sam Shaw. He took photos of the early, happy days of her marriage to Arthur Miller, but was also responsible for that famous billowing skirt shot for The Seven Year Itch.
