Review

A week of programmes documenting the First World War starts here. In Unearthing WW1 (8pm) military historian David O’Keefe and filmmaker Wayne Abbott uncover war junk from some of the great battles of the Great War. It’s followed at 9pm by WW1: Aces Falling, a portrait of fighter pilots Edward Mannock VC and James McCudden VC. Tomorrow in The Last Day of World War One Michael Palin tells the sad stories of those who perished just as the war ended. There are also episodes of The Monocled Mutineer and Blackadder Goes Forth, including on Friday the famous, poignant last ever episode in which Blackadder and his comrades go over the top.

Summary

Historian David O'Keefe and film-maker Wayne Abbott examine some of the most well known conflicts of the First World War. In the first of two programmes, the presenters take a trip to Hong Kong to uncover artefacts from old British tunnels and reunite a father and son who have spent 70 years apart. They also investigate the site of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918.
