Neil Diamond - One Night Only

Neil Diamond: One Night Only

It's an intriguing piece of trivia - recapped here in Rob Brydon's profile - that Neil Diamond was at high school with Barbra Streisand. (So they had a decent school choir, then?) Brydon interviews the great troubadour and revisits some of his childhood haunts in New York, by way of interludes for a concert at the London Palladium (where Brydon attempts a duet on Song Sung Blue - Diamond plays along admirably).

The honeyed baritone is still in impressive shape (Diamond's, not Brydon's), though with the raspy edge he likes to add on selected notes a little rougher now. Beautiful Noise, Cracklin' Rosie, Sweet Caroline and Forever in Blue Jeans are interspersed with songs from his new album.

The legendary crooner takes centre stage at the London Palladium for a one-off TV special featuring some of his greatest hits alongside tracks from his latest album Melody Road. The show's host Rob Brydon tells the story of how his musical hero rose from humble beginnings to become one of the world's most influential and best-loved chart stars. Cameras follow the pair on a journey to Brooklyn, where they visit Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Flatbush and the New York singer's childhood home, as well as the famous Bitter End club in Greenwich Village.
