Rapper/singer Pharrell Williams of Happy fame visits Liberty’s department store in London to look at his new perfume. Encouraged by Liberty’s charismatic, star-struck boss Ed Burstell, Williams explains what it’s like to come up with such a product: “Fragrance to me is paint for the nose… so people who make fragrances… the air is their canvas.” Well, yes, of course.
As we return to this primped, flouncy, thoroughly pretty, trifling series, we once more eavesdrop on the spending habits of the wealthy. How about a belted trenchcoat for your dog? On one of Liberty’s open days where new products are “auditioned” Sal and Richard bring in their jacketed pooches: “These are our children.”
Elsewhere ebullient womenswear assistant Omar shows off his “nomad chic”. And the new visual merchandiser’s summer window displays are too inscrutable.
Managing director Ed Burstell was brought in to revive department store Liberty's fortunes and his vision is to make it the city's premier shopping destination. Part of his rejuvenation is the Open Design Call, a Dragons' Den-style pitching contest where hundreds of hopefuls compete to have their products chosen by a panel of discerning buyers. Meanwhile, there's a visit from Pharrell Williams, who has launched an exclusive fragrance with Liberty.
