Review

You’re never quite sure what Peaky Blinders will do next. It’s not just the characters who are whisky-fuelled and unpredictable – the storylines reel around, scenes jag off in odd (but generally thrilling) directions. It consistently wrong-foots us – as in the very pleasant surprise at the end of last week’s episode, a surprise that tonight lands in Tommy’s lap at an almost comically unhelpful moment.

Things are turning ugly for the Shelby clan. As we rejoin them, a tense opening sees their empire attacked on three fronts, while Tommy is off dallying with his posh racecourse lady at her big country house, oblivious. Naturally, Campbell (Sam Neill) is at the root of it: “I’ve been ahead of you every step of the way,” he gloats. And he has worse up his sleeve.

Summary

Tommy's power base in London is obliterated and Arthur and Michael are imprisoned as Major Campbell makes his influence felt. Distraught at the prospect of losing her son to a lengthy spell in prison, Polly compromises herself to secure Michael's freedom. However, her actions risk damaging already fragile relationships. While attempting to regain the upper hand, Tommy is paid a visit by someone from his past. Old wounds are reopened and he finds himself having to make an impossible decision. Starring Cillian Murphy and Sam Neill.
