Review

It’s hard to avoid comparing this splendid country compilation to a shampoo commercial. Such luscious locks, from clean-cut and quiffy Frank Ifield and jumpsuited Glen Campbell to silver foxes Charlie Rich and Kenny Rogers. Some of the stories behind the songs are compelling, too, including the car crash that led to down-home John Denver recording Take Me Home, Country Roads.

While the overall tempo is a little sleepy, there’s the odd wake-up call (Ricky Scaggs’s finger-picking Country Boy is amazing), while She Is Gone from been-through-it-all Willie Nelson is a heartfelt highlight. He named his guitar Trigger after Roy Rogers’s horse, you know.
